The avocet is unique because of its striking black and white plumage, long legs and raised bill. It uses this to sift through the mud to find worms and shrimps, for example. Breeds in colonies, mainly in saline areas on the coast, but also inland. When it has chicks, a avocet suggests that it is injured. It then lets a wing hang down to divert the attention of its attacker.
