The modern figurative representation in my digital artwork "Piece of Life" is meant to remind us that there are ethical limits and therefore not everything that is genetically possible always has to be implemented. Genetically modified viruses were followed by bacteria, animals and plants. The human genome has remained taboo until 2018, when a Chinese bioscientist used the Crispr/Cas 9 gene scissors to create Lulu and Nana, the world's first genetically modified humans. It is important to educate ourselves about the opportunities and challenges of genetic engineering to promote informed discussion and informed decision-making. Genetic engineering is controversial and raises ethical, environmental and health issues. Concerns include the potential impact on the environment, the safety of GMOs in the food chain and the potential impact on human health. Genetic engineering can help find more sustainable solutions to environmental problems, for example by developing crops that need fewer pesticides or have the ability to break down pollutants.
