About the artwork
I had in mind a fruit still life in the style of the Dutch masters and I think I have succeeded. Here we see some physalis, three in small bowls and one lying on the table. A few dry twigs with dry leaves jostle across the picture. The picture is dark, atmospheric, rustic and above all autumnal. I wanted to conjure up an autumnal mood with this picture. The viewer should feel an echo of the sweetness of summer when they imagine biting into the fresh fruit that is typically only available in autumn. The dark wooden boards and the slightly rusty bowls have a distinctly rustic look and contrast with the delicacy of the paper-thin leaf wrappers of the physalis. The dry, reddish branches criss-crossing the picture are the dry twigs of wild grapes, the leaves clinging to their branches with difficulty. That too is autumn: the silent slumber of the living, dreaming its way through the winter and slowly waking up again in spring.
The picture is a photograph that has been altered with various textures and image processing. My aim was to create an image that was reminiscent of a painting. I think I have achieved that here.
