painting Wild orchids in the Drenthe landscape in the fog
Unfortunately, the wild orchid is becoming less and less easy to find. Fortunately, in this field in Drenthe there are still a lot of these beautiful purple and lilac colored flowers.
The family of orchids (Orchidaceae) is the most extensive plant genus on earth. There are more than 18,000 known species. Orchids belong to the monocotyledons (monocotyledonae or Liliopsida).
In the Netherlands, wild species occur in the dunes, in meadows and along forest edges, which is highly dependent on the soil composition, acidity or lime content of the soil. There are species that are only found on moderately acidic or calcareous soils.
