Cupid of Amor is in Roman mythology the divine, eternally young son of Venus or Aphrodite, the goddess of love and fertility. In Roman culture Venus was often depicted as a woman with a round object in her hand, for example an apple or a mirror, but sometimes with Cupid. Cupid is usually depicted as a naked, chubby boy with wings.
Here, the little putto or angel holds a mirror in front of his mother, who sits half-naked looking at herself and holds her clothes with one hand on her bosom. In doing so, a tit escapes the effort and the girl sits partly topless.
Peter Paul Rubens (Siegen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, 28 June 1577 - Antwerp, Brabant, Spanish Netherlands, 30 May 1640) was a South Dutch painter of Flemish Baroque. He was also called Pieter Paul, Pieter Pauwel or Petrus Paulus.
