About "Pegasus with Christmas lights in the Spaarne in Haarlem"

About the artwork

The Pegasus was built in 1904 at the Boot family yard in Woubrugge to serve as a sailing freighter. In 1990, the ship was restored to its original condition and rebuilt as a charter clipper. It was the first ship to call at a former East German port after the fall of the wall. Today, the Pegasus makes an imposing impression with its beautiful traditional appearance.

The Spaarne is a river in North Holland, the Netherlands. The river flows through Haarlem to Spaarndam. The name Spaarne is probably derived from 'Spier', meaning reed. Originally, the Spaarne formed a connection between the Haarlemmermeer and the IJ. In the 13th century, a dam with sluices was built in the Spaarne at its mouth on the IJ as part of the Spaarndammerdijk. The village of Spaarndam arose here.

Haarlem is a city and municipality in the Netherlands and the capital of the province of North Holland. The city lies on the river Spaarne and in the region of Zuid-Kennemerland. Haarlem is first mentioned in a document from the 10th century. In 1245, it was granted city rights by William II of Holland. By the end of the Middle Ages, Haarlem had become one of Holland's most important cities. In the Early Modern Era, the city developed industrially as a textile city and culturally as a city of painters.

The Gravestone Bridge is a drawbridge intended for pedestrians in the centre of the city of Haarlem. The current bridge dates from 1950 and served as a replacement for the bridge that had been here in the same place for some 600, and maybe even 800 years. The bridge connects the bank of the Korte Spaarne over the Binnen Spaarne with that of the Bakenessergracht.

The Sint-Bavokerk is a late medieval church building in Haarlem, located on the Grote Markt. It was dedicated to St Bavo until the Reformation. The medieval cruciform church (construction period 1370-1520), which stands in the middle of the city's old centre, is built in the Brabant Gothic architectural style.
