Bucolic (or pastoral, or shepherd's) poetry is originally a literary genre from classical antiquity (shepherd's poems, from the Greek boukolos = 'shepherd'). Like the shepherd's game and the shepherd's novel, it is one of the forms of bucolic literature. It is inspired by country life, which is then idealised through the eyes of the urbanite who is estranged from country life. It describes a world of happy country people leading an existence of natural joys and carefree living. Usually there are shepherds, animals like sheep and idealized nature. In the Renaissance, the bucolic or pastoral element also made its appearance in painting.
Here, too, all kinds of livestock appear in the painting, cattle such as a cow and a bull, and sheep. With them is a shepherdess processing wool. In the background two more shepherds arrive with a flute carrying more domestic animals.
Francois Boucher (Paris, France 29 September 1703 - 30 May 1770) was a painter from the French school of the rococo. In 1723 he won the competition for the Grand Prix. The artist is known for his lovely, romantic and sweet paintings with sensual undertones.
