parrots (Psittacidae and Psittaculidae) form a very large group. The South American parrots such as the macaw's, along with a number of families found in Africa, belong to the Psittacidae (Parrots of Africa and the New World). The lori's and parakeets of Australasia and a number of genera including the dwarf parrots (genus Agapornis) of Africa and the vasa parrots of Madagascar belong to the Psittaculidae (Parrots of the Old World).

In the southern hemisphere, species of parakeets naturally occur in areas with temperate climates such as the cockariki's on islands south and east of New Zealand and the magellanic parakeet in the extreme south of Chile. Through escapes from captivity or deliberate introductions, wild populations in the temperate climate zone of the Northern Hemisphere, such as the collar parakeets in major cities in the Netherlands and Belgium, have emerged during the 20th century.
