Between 1540 and 1550, Treviso-born Bordon produced several bust-length versions of the figure of Temptation, depicted as a woman, her bent arm pressed against her side and her dress that fell open to reveal her breasts. Compared to other versions, the young woman in the painting of the Academy is fuller in shape and the only version that is accompanied by other figures: an old maidservant on her shoulder and in the background, looking from a balcony and gesticulating, a male figure in what appears to be a biblical or oriental costume and is therefore identified as King David. According to Italo Faldi, the episode represented is that of Bathsheba in her bath.
The woman in the portrait shows her attractiveness by showing herself topless and thus partly naked. Her dress hangs open so that part of it is bare.
Paris Bordone (Treviso, Italy, ca. 1500 - Venice, January 19, 1571) was an Italian painter of the Venetian School in the period of the Italian Renaissance. His numerous portraits, mainly of women, have an enchanting appeal because of the beautiful colorite he uses. His idealized female figures look elegant and refined.
