This work is one of a series of adaptations of the map of the Dutch provinces. In addition to this parallelogram map, there is also a variant with squares and two with triangles.
The basis in each case is a map on which each of the twelve provinces has its own color. Our neighbors Germany and Belgium are two shades of gray and the North Sea is of course blue.
I have divided that map into parallelograms of regular size, with two of the sides making an angle of 45 degrees with the north-south axis. This creates nice transitional shades in the border areas of the provinces, along the coasts and near the national borders. I have slightly emphasized the borders between the surfaces.
I like to see how, despite the distortion, many things remain recognizable: the Wadden Sea, the IJsselmeer, the Zeeland islands, Limburg stubbornly wedging itself between Belgium and Germany.
If you are lost, this map is of little use to you, but as a cheerful wall decoration it is an asset!
My work can be found in the border regions of photography, painting and computer visuals. With my company 3Develop I do work in commission but I use the same techniques, skills and software to make free work.
