Panoramic view from the summit of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Wetterstein Mountains

by Photo Art Thomas Klee

Anyone who has ever stood on one of the rugged limestone cliffs of the Bavarian Alps knows that feeling of vastness and tranquillity at the same time. That is precisely what this panorama captures: in the foreground, light-coloured, furrowed rocky ridges rise up, their surfaces shaped by wind and weather over millennia. Amidst the grey and beige layers of rock, dark-green mountain pines and alpine meadows thrive, tenaciously clinging to every available patch of earth.

The view opens up wide behind, where mountain range after mountain range fans out in ever-softer shades of blue until they finally merge with the sky on the horizon. Right there, nestled in a lush green valley, lies Garmisch-Partenkirchen – a patchwork of meadows, forests and small settlements that looks almost whimsical from up here.

The sky itself is a subject in its own right: a vibrant, clear blue, streaked with delicate, almost painted wispy clouds that stretch across the entire width in long bands. This blend of rugged rocky landscape, gentle valley floor and dramatic sky makes the photograph a real statement image for anyone who loves mountains, wide open spaces and the rugged Alpine panorama of Upper Bavaria.
