Enkhuizen is a town and municipality in the region of West Friesland, in the Dutch province of North Holland. The municipality lies on both the Markermeer and the IJsselmeer. In the municipality, 18,507 inhabitants live on an area of 116.04 km² (including 103.62 km² of water) (1 January 2019, source: CBS). In addition to the town of the same name, the municipality of Enkhuizen also includes the village of Oosterdijk and the hamlet of Westeinde.
Enkhuizen is known as the 'Haringstad' (herring town) because of its past as a centre for herring fishing. The city is an important tourist centre (marinas, Sprookjeswonderland, Zuiderzee Museum). In addition, the town has internationally renowned seed companies and horticulture, as well as a cluster of plastics industry. In Enkhuizen people speak (to a lesser extent) Enkhuizen, a West Frisian dialect.
