Panorama of Erice, Sicily. Enna is a city on Sicily, Italy and the capital of the province of the same name.
Situated at 942 metres above sea level, the city, in the heart of Sicily, is the highest provincial capital in Italy.
Enna was probably founded around 1000 BC by the Sicilians, and has been inhabited ever since. Due to its high and central location, the city has always been of strategic importance. In ancient times, the city was called Henna or Castrum Hennae. In later times, under Byzantine dominance, the city was called Castro Yannis, which later became Castrogiovanni in Italian. Since 1927, the city has been called Enna again.
Enna was the centre of the first great slave revolt in Roman history, from 135 to 132 BC, under the leadership of the Syrian slave Eunus.
