A satyr or satyros is a cheerful and naughty forest creature and has the task of a fertility spirit. It is known for its appetite for wine and for seducing nymphs and ephebi. Satyrs let instinct prevail over reason, anarchy over order, ecstasy over asceticism, abundance over moderation. They symbolize lust and ecstasy, just like the female followers of Dionysus, the Mainads or Bacchae.
A nymph (Ancient Greek: νύμφη: bride, veiled) is a Greek demigodess and daimon who lives in nature, and is often bound to a certain place or plant species.
The nymph belongs to the chtonic gods and appears very often, as do the - attacking them - Satyrs, Pans, Panisks and other beings of the same kind, in the wake of Dionysos (wine god). She is a graceful girl, who in the religious representations of the Greeks was a personification of the life and restless activity that reigns in nature.
Peter Paul Rubens (Siegen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, 28 June 1577 - Antwerp, Brabant, Spanish Netherlands, 30 May 1640) was a South Dutch painter of Flemish Baroque. He was also called Pieter Paul, Pieter Pauwel or Petrus Paulus.
