The pygmy owl is the smallest owl species in Europe and is about the size of a starling. It is found in coniferous or mixed deciduous forests. It nests in tree cavities made by woodpeckers.
Its plumage is dark brown and mottled on top, grey-white on the underside.
They eat mostly insects, songbirds and mice.
Despite its small size, it is a fierce hunter, attacking birds as large as the owl itself or sometimes larger.
