Orientation by Eric Boer

Sometimes you don’t need answers, but a new perspective.

‘Orientation’ arose from my fascination with space, ancient civilisations and the symbols with which people have been trying to make sense of the world around them for thousands of years. Not everything we see needs to be explained. Sometimes it is precisely the unknown that makes something interesting.

At the centre of the work is a pattern of concentric circles, surrounded by powerful geometric lines. Two large, eye-like shapes draw the eye and lend the image an observant and mysterious quality. Smaller references can be spotted at the edges, such as a sun, moon and other symbols. They are deliberately not all prominently featured. Some details only become apparent when you look at the work for a little longer.

The combination of turquoise, black, white and earthy tones gives the whole piece a graphic and somewhat weathered look. The visible texture and irregular lines ensure that the work does not become too rigid and retains its handmade character.

For me, ‘Orientation’ is about searching, observing and remaining curious. Not searching for a single definitive answer or a final destination, but leaving room for wonder and different ways of looking at the world.

Thanks to its powerful forms and limited colour palette, it is a striking piece that will look particularly good in a modern, industrial or eclectic interior.
