October and November are the key olive picking months in Umbria, Italy. Where I live we are surrounded by olive groves, with the majority grown to make olive oil. The whole year centres around the different elements of olive agriculture and harvest time is a busy, noisy affair. The olives in this photo art image, look very inviting hanging on the olive trees ripe and ready to pick. But beware the ignorant who thinks they can be plucked and eaten straight from the tree as they are incredibly bitter. Few people know that the olives we eat spend a long time being cured (lots of different ways including soaking in brine) before they are edible. This can take several month. But, here in my part of Italy, the variety of olives grown are for making oil.
