Close-up of an old, wooden aircraft propeller. A propeller or airscrew can be used to convert a rotary motion generated by an engine into forward or backward motion. Propellers are used to propel aircraft. Wooden propellers are composed of several layers, each layer of a different type of wood. The propeller consists of a number of blades mounted on a shaft. The blades of an aircraft propeller have a similar cross-section (profile) to an aircraft wing. As the propeller moves through the air, a difference in pressure is then created on two sides of the blade just like a wing, creating a force on the blade in a forward direction.
