Ochre and Purple Abstract Painting: A Whirl around a Still Centre by Surreal Media

From the top left to the bottom right, a whirlwind of colour races through this work. Broad, thick strokes in ochre, amber, plum purple, anthracite and bone white swirl around one another, like a gust of wind sweeping everything away. A large, light area remains empty in the top right-hand corner. It is still there, and it is precisely that stillness that makes the movement around it so powerful.

Be sure to look at the details. In the centre, a narrow strip of copper foil glints between the ridges, warm and metallic, like a hidden treasure. Slightly higher up, there is a spot where the white layer has cracked, revealing a fine network of craquelure lines, as if the paint had dried in the sun. And at the top of the swirl, thin, sharp lines shoot off, like traces of speed.

It began with the feeling of a restless mind seeking tranquillity. Everything is spinning, yet there is a place where it grows still. The colours are warm and earthy, interspersed with cool purple and black, lending the work a dramatic yet elegant atmosphere.

It is a digital artwork designed to resemble thickly applied paint with a rough crust, texture and cracks, lit from the side so that every ridge casts a shadow.

The freestanding form looks particularly striking in a hall, stairwell or next to a tall cupboard. It appeals to people with energetic lifestyles – dancers, sportspeople, creative thinkers – anyone who knows how precious a moment of silence can be. Or take a look at: "Paarse Abstract Schilderij: Cirkel van Verborgen Vuur", which features the same glow of purple and warmth.
