The Oakland Bay Bridge, locally called the Bay Bridge, connects San Francisco to Oakland. The 2 suspension bridges below connect San Francisco to the artificial Treasure Island. The steel suspension bridges each have a clear span of 704 meters. It has a double lane deck where traffic on the upper bridge deck travels to San Francisco and the lower section travels to Oakland. On the east side of this island is the truss bridge to Oakland. The bridge opened in 1936, 6 months after the adjacent Golden Gate Bridge opened. After an earthquake in 1989, the bridge on the eastern part of the island was replaced by a self-anchored suspension bridge consisting not of 2 bridge decks 28.5 meters wide side by side.
