Norway – fjords

by Vlindertuin-Art

The Norwegian fjords are renowned for their steep rock faces, deep waters and serene atmosphere. In this composition, purple-tinged mountains on either side form a natural frame around a small glimpse of the water. A cruise ship sails across the tranquil fjord, creating a subtle contrast in scale with the enormous rock formations in the background. In the foreground, densely growing, stylised ferns enhance the sense of depth in the image.

The colour palette is dominated by atmospheric shades of purple and violet, combined with deep indigo in the shadows and soft pastel colours in the sky. The ship adds a bright red accent to the otherwise cool and tranquil colour scheme. The graphic style is characterised by large, streamlined blocks of colour and intricate colour gradients, giving the design a stylised and modern aesthetic. This design draws on the design tradition of 20th-century Northern European travel posters. At the time, steamship companies and travel organisations commissioned graphic artists to create posters that depicted the Norwegian landscape in a simplified and appealing manner. Characteristic features of these historic posters included the use of bold typography, flowing lines and a focus on the grandeur of nature. This illustration pays homage to that design philosophy in a contemporary form.
