High water in the river Waal near Nijmegen. This happens several times a year and the river has been given the rhombus for this in recent years. under the bridge it quickly floods, while the freeway on the waalkade vbaak remains dry. however, the pedestrian bridge to the Stadswaard is soon inaccessible. The Waal is a Dutch river. At Pannerden, the Rhine splits into the Pannerdensch Kanaal, which changes into the Nederrijn 6 km further on, and the Waal. The Waal is by far the most water-rich arm of the Rhine in the Netherlands (65% of the water discharge) and also the most important for shipping. The total length of the Waal is 82 kilometers. From its former confluence with the Meuse at Woudrichem (now the Afgedamde Meuse), the Waal passes into the Merwede and then flows to the North Sea via various routes; most of the water flows into the Hollandsch Diep via the Nieuwe Merwede. The water between the Noord and the Oude Maas, south of Ridderkerk, is also called the Waal: this section of about 9 km length is a remnant of an earlier location of this river. The Waal is connected to the Nederrijn and Amsterdam by the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal (near Tiel) and to the Maas by the Maas-Waalkanaal (near Nijmegen) and the Canal of St. Andries. At the latter point, the Waal and the Maas flow past each other at a distance of 1.9 km.
