Night peacock (caterpillar)
Males fly in rapid flight during the day in sunny weather and are then sometimes mistaken for diurnal butterflies such as the little fox (Aglais urticae). The butterflies are rarely seen in large numbers, except when an unfertilised female is found, as one female can attract many males. The females fly at night and appear in small numbers on light, usually early at night. Sometimes they are found resting during the day.
Belgium
Fairly rare, but locally common throughout Flanders. Quite common and widespread in Wallonia.
Life cycle
Caterpillar: May-August. The caterpillars first live in groups and are often clearly visible during the day. The pupa overwinters in a light brown solid paper-like cocoon. This is shaped like an urn with a wreath of upright spines around the narrow opening to ward off predators. The cocoon is attached to plant stems slightly above the ground. The eggs are deposited in groups and attached to the host plant.

Hello, my great passion is photography.
What I love most about it is its versatility. There are countless subjects and disciplines. From tiny itchy critters with macro photography to majestic castles. Lovely!..
