The Nieuwendam was constructed as a dike along the harbour in 1341. This small dike connected to the sea dike, creating a piece of land outside the dike. Indeed, the oldest buildings were built in the 14th century. In the 15th and 16th centuries, all kinds of craftsmen who depended on supply and transport of goods by water were located here, such as potters and wood and stone traders. In addition, sailmakers and rope makers lived here. And there were, as can be expected in a harbour area, several inns.
