New York is the largest city in the United States of America. Thanks to its leadership and influence in commerce, finance, media, public relations, art, fashion and education, it is considered one of the most important world cities. The city is also called New York City or NYC to distinguish it from New York State, in which it lies. New York is not the capital of that state, which is Albany.
The New York metropolitan area constitutes one of the largest urban areas in the world. It is the most populous major city in the United States,[1][2] and with its approximately 8.5 million inhabitants spread over an area of 789.43 km², it constitutes the 20th largest city in the world in terms of size,[3][4] New York City consists of five boroughs or boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. Many of the city's landmarks and districts are world-famous and often symbolise the United States in general. These include the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, the old World Trade Center, destroyed by terrorists in 2001, with its Twin Towers, and its successor, the One World Trade Center, opened in 2014.
The hustle and bustle give the city the nickname The City That Never Sleeps ("the city that never sleeps"). Another popular nickname is the Big Apple.[5]
