On the border between the Netherlands and Germany, the tidal river Eems flows into the Wadden Sea. Fresh and salt water come together and this creates a special landscape with plants, birds, fish and other animals that live nowhere else in the Wadden Sea.
Because the water here is less salty than elsewhere in the Wadden Sea, plant growth is created with a unique character. Striking are the extensive easter fields that colour the area lilac in late summer.
From the birdwatching hut you can see how water and land merge into one another. The Dollard's muddy fields are home to hundreds of colourful beachcombers. Also regularly spotted: brothers, seals (with a bit of luck whether or not accompanied by their young) and porpoises!
