General view of Neurath power station, units A-E.
The Neurath power plant is located in the south of Grevenbroich in North Rhine-Westphalia. With a gross electrical output of 4,400 megawatts, it is the largest power plant in Germany and the second largest lignite-fired power plant in Europe.
The lignite-fired power plant is used to generate base load electricity. The coal is sourced via a railway siding from the nearby open-cast mines in the Rhenish lignite mining area, in particular the Garzweiler open-cast mine.
