Naumburg is one of the most beautiful towns in central Germany. The 1000-year-old cathedral city in the centre of Saale-Unstrut has many historical treasures to offer. First and foremost, the famous founder figure of Uta in Naumburg Cathedral, the most important building from the High Middle Ages. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018.
The buildings around the market square were built on their Renaissance and Baroque predecessors after the town fire in 1517 and form a unique architectural unity. The multi-storey roof structures served as warehouses in the Middle Ages and are reminiscent of Naumburg's heyday as a trade fair city.
The town hall was also built in the Renaissance style between 1517 and 1528. Parts of the previous buildings that had been spared in the town fire were reused.
The Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region is very close to Naumburg. Wine-growing in the Unstrut valley can look back on a 1000-year tradition. The centre of the northernmost wine-growing region in Europe is Freyburg. From Naumburg, a trip to the vineyards in the surrounding area is definitely worthwhile.
