Narrow plantain is a very common native, perennial plant. The long, lanceolate, slightly glossy leaves, which have five to seven veins, are all in a leaf rosette on gutter-shaped sunken stalks. In nutrient-rich soil, the leaves are erect. In nutrient-poor soil, they are smaller and broader in shape and lie flatter against the ground. The unleaved flower stalk is grooved and carries at the end a very short spike with puny, inconspicuous flowers (April-September) and long stamens with whitish-yellow or brownish anthers. The spike is somewhat shorter and more convex in shape on plants in nutrient-poor conditions.
In the Hemelrijk Waard these plants were in full bloom. And the more together the more beautiful they are.
