The city of Naples is unique. The centre of Naples consists of a maze of narrow, dark alleyways that have a charm all of their own. The layout of the historic centre, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, still corresponds to that of the Greek colony of Neapolis and visitors can follow the ancient streets. In some places, the remains of the old city walls and city gates are still clearly recognisable.
The Piazza del Municipio is one of the largest squares in Europe and one of the most important in Naples. Around the square are the Teatro Mercadante, the Palace of the Bank of Italy, the headquarters of the Bank of Rome, the Grand Hotel de Londres, St James Palace (town hall) and the cruise port.
Castel Sant'Elmo is a military fortress on the Vomero hill in Naples and the best vantage point over the city. If you do not want to climb the hill on foot, you can also reach the fortress by funicular railway.
