A Mainade or Maenade, also known as Bacchant, are figures from Greek mythology. It is a nymph that accompanies and worships Dionysos (god of wine, pleasure and dance). Many are oreads, naiads and other nymphs, but mortal women can also become mainads.
They are often depicted with a crown of vines. They are known as possessed women ("in Bacchian rapture") who perform wild dances and give in to brutal violence, sex, booze and mutilation. Their food consists of raw meat, which they tear off from their victim with their bare hands.
Here the girl is depicted naked with a ribbon in front of the cross. Because of this the hips, belly, torso and breasts are exposed and the work falls under a nude portrait with a nude model. The arms and legs of the woman are also exposed.
Next to the lady stands a bust smiling at her.
Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (Valencia, Spain, 27 February 1863 - Madrid, 10 August 1923) was a Spanish painter.
