The Wankel engine, named after its inventor Felix Wankel ( was first conceived in 1932 and was only used after 1960 in an NSU Prinz III with the designation KKM 250. For serial use in Germany then in the NSU Wankel Spyder (1964-1967).
World success came in 1969 with the streamlined Mercedes-Benz C 111 and a built-in three-plate Wankel engine with gasoline injection as the mid-engine.
And in Japan, the Mazda 110 S Cosmo went into series production with a Wankel engine from 1967, built until 1972, and other models with a Wankel engine at Mazda followed such as the Mazda RX 7 (1978-2002). Japan produced well over 1 million vehicles with Wankel engines.
