Mute swans are partly descended from birds bred for their down, but are also indigenous. When these large birds fly over, a loud whistling sound is heard from their wings. Non-breeding swans are mostly seen in meadows, where they feast on grass. Both partners of a breeding pair are usually faithful to each other for life. If one of the two birds dies, the other may take several years to find a new partner.
