Munttoren & Hotel de l'Europe Amsterdam The Munttoren, also known as De Munt, is officially called Regulierstoren and used to be part of the Regulierspoort. This city gate was one of the three main gates of the city's medieval fortifications. The tower stands on the Muntplein which was originally called Sophiaplein (after Queen Sophie) from 1877 to 1917 and Schapenplein until 1877. Today it is a busy intersection between Kalverstraat and Reguliersbreestraat, close to the flower market on the Singel. Many Amsterdammers as well as tourists walk next to the tower under the small gate, towards Kalverstraat or Reguliersbreestraat.
