About the artwork

The Marienplatz is the central square of the Altstadt of the Bavarian capital Munich.

Since the foundation of Munich in 1158 by Henry the Lion, Marienplatz has been the heart of the city. Initially, the square was simply called a market. In 1638, Elector Maximilian I erected a column with a statue of Mary on it in honour of the Swedish liberation in the Thirty Years' War. On 9 October 1854 the name officially became Marienplatz. Between 1867 and 1909 the new town hall was built on the square. During the Second World War Munich also did not escape the bombing and the square was partly destroyed. Not all town halls were rebuilt afterwards.

Charles Johann Palmié (1863, Aschersleben, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany-1911) A pointillist / neo-impressionist painter is known as one of the founders of Wassily Kandinsky in 1909 of NKVM.

Palmie then spent two years at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts in Saxony. In 1884 Palmie moved from Dresden to Munich, Bavaria.
