About ‘Mount Rainier National Park, Paradise meadows bear grass, Washington, USA’ by Jeroen van Deel

Mount Rainier National Park is a national park in the US state of Washington. Administratively, it is located in Pierce and Lewis County. It covers 953 km² around the 4392-metre-high stratovolcano Mount Rainier, the highest peak in the Cascade Range.

On 2 March 1899, President William McKinley had the park established. It was the fifth national park established in the United States. The park is managed by the National Park Service.

The park is dominated by old-growth forests, waterfalls, subalpine flower meadows and twenty-six glaciers. The park is home to about 50 different species of native mammals. The forested parts of the park are home to mule deer, moose, black bears, coyotes and red lynx. In the remote hinterland of the park, the puma is found. There are also many smaller species of mammals, such as porcupines, squirrels, raccoons and pine martens. The bird population contains more than one hundred and forty species. The largest common bird species is the golden eagle; the hummingbird is the smallest.
