On the northern island of New Zealand is the Tongariro National Park. A beautiful and gigantic volcanic area where (according to several travel magazines) you can make one of the most beautiful day hikes in the world called Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Three weeks before I started my 7.5 hour hike there was a small volcanic eruption which closed off part of the hike. The hike did not continue as the Emerald Lakes. Before you arrive at the Emerals Lakes you first pass Mount Ngauruhoe which you see on the picture. Mount Ngauruhoe is not a mountain but simply a volcano (where some scenes of Lord of the rings were filmed).
