About "Motorway in Iceland"

by KC Photography

About the artwork

The most important road in Iceland is the ring road or Hringvegur. This approximately 1,350-kilometre long road with road number 1 runs around the whole island, connecting some of the largest towns but skipping the remote areas. Iceland is an island state northwest of mainland Europe. Iceland is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the south, the Denmark Strait (between Iceland and Greenland) to the west and the Greenland Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean, to the north. The capital Reykjavík is located on the south-west coast and is the northernmost capital on earth. The island was created geologically some 20 million years ago by volcanic activity in the Atlantic Ocean; however, it remained uninhabited for a long time. According to tradition, the Norwegian Ingólfur Arnarson, who arrived in 874, was Iceland's first permanent resident. The majority of Icelanders are descended from Norwegian and Irish settlers, and Iceland's culture is strongly influenced by Norwegian culture. Icelandic belongs to the Scandinavian languages.
