Between Hoogezand and Zuidlaren lies the Zuidlaardermeer. It originated in the Middle Ages and had a direct connection to the sea. By flooding and storm tide the lake became bigger and bigger. Large parts of the lake and the adjacent polders are now managed by the foundation Het Groninger Landschap. The lake and surrounding area, including the Kropswolderbuitenpolder is a favorite area for nature lovers to spot birds, beavers and otters. The lake is connected to the Winschoterdiep via the Drentsche Diep, Hunze river.
