The name came about because the Duke of Alva wanted to build a castle near this tower, and wanted to give this castle the name Monte Albano. The tower was then called "Monte-Albaens-tower", which became popularly known as Montelbaanstoren.
Amsterdam, the Dutch capital, is known for its artistic heritage, its extensive network of canals and its narrow gabled houses, a legacy of the Golden Age.
