During a visit to Mandalay it is also worthwhile to visit Mingun and its surroundings. Via a boat trip of 11km you sail from Mandalay over the Irrawaddy River to Mingun. During this 1 hour boat trip you will see the landscape and life along the shore pass by. Once ashore, there are a number of sights to visit. In the center of Mingun stands the beginning of what should have been the largest stupa in the world. You will also find the famous Hsinbyume Pagoda, also known as the white pagoda. This pagoda is one of the most photographed places in Myanmar. The Hsinbyume pagoda was built by the grandson of King Bodawpaya. It is a beautiful, white pagoda made up of several layers that symbolize the seven mountains of Mount Muru. Atop the pagoda you have a beautiful view of Mingun and the Irrawaddy River. At the pagoda, monks regularly walk around in their bright red robes that contrast beautifully with the white pagoda. Very photogenic.
