Pieter Cornelis (Piet) Mondrian (Amersfoort, March 7, 1872 - New York, February 1, 1944) was a Dutch painter and art theorist, who lived and worked abroad in later life. Mondrian is widely regarded as a pioneer of abstract and non-figurative art. In particular, his later geometric-abstract work, with its characteristic horizontal and vertical black lines and primary colors, is world famous and serves as an inspiration to many architects and designers of applied art. He was one of the most important contributors to the journal De Stijl and developed his own art theory, which he called New Imagery or Neoplasticism.

Together with Van Doesburg, Van der Leck and Huszár, Mondrian founded the group 'consciously abstract' or 'others really' in 1916. In 1917 Van Doesburg asked him to contribute to a journal to be set up for this group, which was to be called De Stijl. In November 1918, he endorsed, among others, the First Manifesto of De Stijl. His work for De Stijl ultimately led to the publication of the book Le Néo-Plasticisme in 1921.

New Imagery or Neo-Plasticism is an art theory, which arose around 1917 around the magazine De Stijl. The most important representatives of the new style are the artists Theo van Doesburg and Piet Mondriaan. They aimed to purify art of elements they felt did not belong in it and tried to rationally determine and apply the elementary (and in their view universal) principles of every art form.
