The monarch butterfly, also called monarch or American monarch, is a butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. The monarch butterfly is one of the best known butterfly species of North America. North American populations migrate north in large numbers in the spring, developing several generations, and return south in the fall, where the species overwinters in huge groups. The monarch butterfly is a fairly large butterfly. The total body length is about 5 centimeters and the wingspan is up to 10 centimeters. The wings are strikingly colored, with the main color being orange. The wing surface is divided into cells by the black wing veins. The wing edge has a wide black margin with many small white spots. source wikipedia
