In "Portable Island", where the portability mentioned in the title now refers to a new concept of landscape, shifted - also in scale - to the size of a board game. At the same time, nature also changes: it is no longer a typical European forest, but lush tropical plants and palms. These are systematically rendered in dull shades of grey - inspired by Eduard Riou's engravings in the scientific writer Louis Figuier's book The World Before the Deluge, published in Paris in 1863 - contrasting with the bluish background of the lazily choppy sea and the clear sky, over which two enigmatic geometric shadows glide, like disturbing eagles. The artist offers us his reflection on art, i.e. on that which is simultaneously its privilege and limit: the ability to grasp only a part of reality at a time, the overall and ultimate meaning of which nevertheless remains beyond the artist's reach, at least as far as this miniature island is removed from the real landscape in the background. Alberto Savinio (Athens, 25 August 1891 - Florence, 5 May 1952) was an Italian artist. After studying at the Athens Conservatory, Alberto Savinio left for Munich to continue his music studies. In 1910, Alberto Savinio settled in Paris. After 1930, he was active as a painter and writer.
