About "Midsummer Night in Iceland"

by Koen Hoekemeijer

About the artwork

Summers in Iceland are not nearly as predictable or stable as summers in, say, Greece. But sometimes all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place and we have a beautiful calm and sunny summer day. No high temperatures, but still wonderfully mild.

This picture was taken in northeast Iceland near Húsavík. In the summer the sun almost doesn't set, which means that on nice days you have beautiful sunsets. On this evening, clouds were slowly moving towards the sea and the low sun lit up the clouds beautifully. And so around midnight I got on my bike hoping to take some nice pictures.

The Lupine flower in the foreground, did not occur in Iceland before. Actually, only one person is responsible for the presence of this flower. In 1945, a committee was formed in Iceland to replant parts of Iceland. Hákon Bjarnason was the one who chose the flower in Alaska and since then large parts of Iceland turn purple during the summer months.

Icelanders refer to the flower as Lúpína, but this flower simply has its own Icelandic name; Úlfabaunir which means as much as Wolf Beans.
