At Upper Mesa Falls, a thundering curtain of water - as high as a 10-storey building - plunges over remnants of an ancient volcanic super eruption. A kilometre south, Lower Mesa Falls repeats the spectacle, with the river constantly chiselling at the solidified ash and lava. The magnificent Upper and Lower Mesa Falls are the last prominent waterfalls in the Snake River that have not been influenced by man. A scenic hiking trail leads to excellent vantage points.
