Merseburg Cathedral of St. John and St. Laurence is a Protestant church and one of the most outstanding architectural monuments on the Romanesque Road. The foundation of the cathedral goes back to its predecessor, St. John's Church. In 1015, the foundation stone of the cathedral was laid by Bishop Thietmar of Merseburg.
Merseburg Castle is a Renaissance-style castle in Saxony-Anhalt. It was a royal palace, bishop's seat and ducal residence.
Emperor Otto I founded the diocese of Merseburg in 968. Bishop Heinrich von Warin had the first castle built from 1245 to 1265. Under Bishop Thilo von Trotha, the castle was rebuilt around 1470 to 1500 as a three-wing complex, with Merseburg Cathedral forming a fourth wing.
