Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the legendary Mercedes-Benz designer, set a motorway record of 245 km/h in a converted 300 SL in 1958. The red SL is still equipped with the longest rear axle ratio of 3.25:1 available at the time.
It came to real fame with racing driver Eberhard Mahle (* 7 January 1933 in Stuttgart; † 21 December 2021), who drove this converted 300 SL Roadster to many first places in hill climbs and airfield races from 1960 to 1962. Eberhard Mahle was a driver for the Mercedes-Benz works rally team from 1960.
