At 1142 metres above sea level, the Brocken is the highest mountain in the Harz low mountain range, in Saxony-Anhalt and in the whole of northern Germany. It is located in the Schierke district of the town of Wernigerode in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt.
The memorial plaque commemorates the former inner-German border, which ran in the immediate vicinity of the Brocken.
The Brocken weather station, the top of the Brocken Hotel and the Brocken transmission tower can be seen in the background.
