About the artwork

Eating is the activity of taking in food. Due to a structured existence, humans eat about three times a day in most cases. At these three times, one takes in a meal, or in other words, eats food: In the morning, after getting up and before indulging in daily activities, one eats, as the first meal of the day, a breakfast. Around the middle of the day, usually between 12 and 2 p.m., and depending on how much time one spends on it, one partakes of a midday meal, which is usually called lunch or midday meal. This is usually called lunch or midday meal. After returning home from the activities performed in the afternoon, and thus late afternoon or early evening, usually between 5 and 7 p.m., one partakes of an evening meal. This is usually called supper, dinner or hot meal. Charles Mertens (Antwerp, 14 April 1865 - Calverley, England, 20 February 1919) was a Belgian draughtsman, painter and etcher. Mertens studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He produced landscapes, portraits and genre pieces. The painter is considered a forerunner of Impressionism. He was a co-founder of the Kunst van Heden group, a Belgian association of visual artists and art patrons, founded in Antwerp on 1 March 1905. With Piet Verhaert, he was an important representative of the Antwerp School in the late 19th century.
